Product Description

FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K is a polyurethane-based, single-component, solvent-borne, flexible and waterproof, low-viscosity primer. Thanks to its ready-to-use formulation, no mixing is required. It can be easily applied by roller, trowel, or zero-notch trowel.

The product is preferred as a primer before polyurethane-based waterproofing coatings, over asphalt membranes, and beneath FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane and polyurea coatings. When mixed with an appropriate amount of silica sand, it can also be used as a repair mortar. It provides an adhesion strength of over 2.70 N/mm² on concrete surfaces and ensures long-lasting protection with its excellent chemical resistance and hydrophobic structure.

Technical values are valid for conditions of +23°C temperature and 50% relative humidity. Higher temperatures shorten the time; lower temperatures extend it.

Key Benefits

  • Its single-component structure offers practical and fast application.
  • Provides strong adhesion with over 2.70 N/mm² bond strength on concrete surfaces.
  • Its flexible structure ensures resistance to surface movements.
  • Its hydrophobic (water-repellent) property protects the surface against water and moisture.
  • Excellent chemical resistance allows safe use in aggressive environments.
  • Compatible with FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane and polyurea coatings, forming a complete waterproofing system.

Advantages

  • Suitable for interior and exterior applications.
  • Provides excellent adhesion.
  • Has excellent chemical resistance.
  • High bond strength.
  • Flexible.
  • Easy to apply.
  • Liquid-tight.
  • Hydrophobic (water-repellent) properties.

Usage Areas

  • As a primer before polyurethane-based waterproofing coatings
  • As a primer over asphalt membranes
  • As a repair mortar when mixed with an appropriate amount of silica sand
  • As a primer beneath FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane and polyurea waterproofing coatings

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

Concrete substrates must be prepared using abrasive equipment (shot blasting, milling, diamond grinding, etc.) to remove laitance and achieve an open-pore surface. Weak concrete particles must be removed from the surface, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. Substrate repairs should be carried out with FOX MORTAR FC188 T repair mortar. Concrete compressive strength must be at least 25 N/mm², tensile strength at least 1.5 N/mm², moisture content maximum 4%, and substrate temperature minimum +5°C.

  2. 2

    Checking Application Conditions

Surface moisture content must be below 4% (tested by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Surface, substrate, and material temperature must be between a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +30°C.

  3. 3

    Mixing

FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K is ready to use; no mixing is required.

  4. 4

    Application

FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K is applied by roller, trowel, or zero-notch trowel. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. Not recommended for use on excessively porous surfaces; in such cases, FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER or FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB should be preferred. After application, a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 48 hours must be waited before applying another coating. If the waiting period exceeds 48 hours, re-priming must be carried out. The coating must be protected from water contact for at least 24 hours after application.

  5. 5

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or polyurethane thinner. Once FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

Critical

During application, the surface temperature, ambient temperature, and material temperature must be a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +30°C.

Critical

The surface moisture content must be below 4%. Test method: CM measurement or oven-drying method.

Critical

There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%.

Critical

Beware of dew point and condensation! Dew formation and water vapour condensation on uncoated or freshly coated surfaces will damage the coating.

Critical

After application of FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K, a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 48 hours must be waited before applying another coating. If more than 48 hours have elapsed, re-priming is required.

Critical

After completion of application, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In case of water contact, softening and blistering will occur, causing the coating to lose its properties. In this case, the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be created on slabs resting on soil.

Important

Not recommended for use on excessively porous surfaces. In such cases, FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER or FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB should be used.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather applications, the ambient and substrate temperature should be raised, and packaging should be kept at +20/+25°C to improve workability before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals, and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

When stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, between +5°C and +30°C, the shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture.

Critical

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous. Storage and application areas must be ventilated.

Critical

During application, appropriate work clothing, protective gloves, goggles, and a mask must be worn in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; if contact occurs, wash immediately with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. Store out of reach of children.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
