Product Description

FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K RAPID is a polyurethane-based, single-component, solvent-free, flexible, waterproof, fast-curing, low-viscosity primer. It is used as a primer prior to polyurethane-based waterproofing coatings, over asphalt membranes, under FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings, and as an intercoat adhesion primer for polyurethane and polyurea products where the recoat window has been exceeded. When mixed with an appropriate quantity of silica sand, it can also be applied as a repair mortar. The product is ready to use and requires no mixing; it can be easily applied by roller, trowel, or notched squeegee. With a total solids content of 100%, this solvent-free formulation contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC). It allows overcoating after approximately 2–4 hours, enabling a fast workflow.

Key Benefits

  • Overcoatable in approximately 2–4 hours, accelerating the project schedule.
  • High adhesion strength supports the long-term durability of coating systems.
  • Single-component, ready-to-use formulation eliminates the risk of mixing errors.
  • Flexible structure provides resistance to minor substrate movements.
  • Excellent chemical resistance makes it suitable for industrial and infrastructure projects.

Usage Areas

  • As a primer prior to polyurethane-based waterproofing coatings
  • As a primer over asphalt membranes
  • As a repair mortar when mixed with an appropriate quantity of silica sand
  • As a primer under FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings
  • As an intercoat adhesion primer for polyurethane and polyurea products where the recoat window has been exceeded
  • As a primer for improving intercoat adhesion in FOX PURMAX® ULTRA, Polyurea, and Polyurethane systems
  • As a primer before sandblasting, to improve adhesion strength for subsequent coatings (ceramic, marble, etc.) applied after FOX PURMAX® ULTRA, Polyurea, and Polyurethane systems

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

Concrete substrates must be prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling, or diamond grinding to remove laitance and achieve an open-pore surface. Weak concrete particles must be removed from the surface, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be removed with an industrial vacuum. Substrate repairs must be carried out with FOX MORTAR FC188 T repair mortar before proceeding.

  2. 2

    Surface Quality Control

Concrete substrates must be sound and have a minimum compressive strength of 25 N/mm² and a minimum tensile strength of 1.5 N/mm². Moisture content must be a maximum of 4%, substrate temperature a minimum of +8°C, and the substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. The surface must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, oil, grease, coating residues, and curing compounds.

  3. 3

    Ensuring Application Conditions

Surface temperature: minimum +8°C – maximum +30°C; ambient temperature: minimum +10°C – maximum +30°C; material temperature: minimum +15°C – maximum +30°C. Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%; dew formation and condensation must be prevented.

  4. 4

    Mixing

FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K RAPID is ready to use; no mixing is required.

  5. 5

    Application

FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K RAPID is applied by roller, trowel, or notched squeegee. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. The recommended consumption is 150–300 gr/m². After application, a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 48 hours must be allowed before the next coating. Re-priming is required if 48 hours is exceeded.

  6. 6

    Tool Cleaning

After application, tools and equipment must be cleaned with solvent or polyurethane thinner. Once FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K RAPID has cured, it can only be removed from surfaces by mechanical means.

Critical

The substrate temperature must be a minimum of +8°C and the ambient temperature a minimum of +10°C. Application must not be carried out below these temperatures.

Critical

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. It should be noted that water contact will cause the coating to lose its properties and it will need to be completely removed and reapplied.

Critical

After applying FOX PURMAX® PRIMER 1K RAPID, a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 48 hours must be allowed before applying a subsequent coating. In cases exceeding 48 hours, re-priming is required.

Critical

The surface moisture content must be below 4%. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%.

Critical

Beware of dew and condensation! The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

Important

Not recommended for use on excessively porous surfaces. In such cases, FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER or FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB should be used.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be installed on ground-bearing slabs.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions. In cold weather, packaging should be kept at +20/+25°C until ready for use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals, and insects must be prevented from coming into contact with the coating while it is still fresh.

Important

The product must be stored at room temperature between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture.

Important

Must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost. For short-term storage, a maximum of 3 pallets may be stacked; for long-term storage, pallets must not be stacked.

Critical

It is dangerous to approach storage and application areas with open flames. Storage and application areas must be ventilated.

Important

Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles, and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Information

Technical data values are given for +23°C and 50% relative humidity conditions. Higher temperatures shorten the times; lower temperatures extend them.
