Product Description

EPOTHANE® BASECOAT GRANIKOL BINDER is an epoxy resin-based, two-component, high chemical resistance, solvent-free, UV-resistant, self-levelling, transparent binder. Specially developed for Granikol floor coating systems, this product is applied by mixing with FOX GRANIKOL FILLER. At the recommended application thickness of 1.0–2.0 mm, it forms a glossy, hygienic and liquid-impermeable floor coating surface. With a density of 1.15±0.05 gr/cm³, the product contains 100% solids and no thinner is used. At +23°C it offers approximately 45 minutes of pot life. After 7 days of curing, it achieves a compressive strength of ≥60 N/mm², flexural tensile strength of ≥30 N/mm² and adhesion to concrete of ≥1.5 N/mm². It can be safely used in exhibition and fair areas, hospitals, schools, hotels, shopping centres and many areas requiring hygiene.

Advantages

  • High chemical and mechanical resistance.
  • Easy to maintain and clean.
  • Flowable.
  • Provides hygienic environments.
  • Liquid-impermeable.
  • Glossy topcoat finish is achieved.
  • High adhesion strength.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

Concrete substrates must be prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding to remove the cement laitance and achieve an open-pored surface. Weak concrete particles must be removed from the surface, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For substrate repairs and levelling, a mortar obtained by mixing EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer with 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand should be used.

  2. 2

    Checking Application Conditions

Surface moisture content must be below 4% (must be tested by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM. Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%, and the floor temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Surface, ambient and material temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C.

  3. 3

    Priming

Surfaces to which EPOTHANE® BASECOAT GRANIKOL BINDER will be applied must be pre-primed with an EPOTHANE® series primer suitable for the floor condition (refer to the primer selection table for primer choice). The floor temperature must be a minimum of +10°C; application over the primer must be carried out within the specified recoat time.

  4. 4

    Mixing

After fully adding component B into component A, mix for at least 3 minutes at 300–400 rpm using an electric mixer and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Avoid over-mixing to minimise air entrainment.

  5. 5

    Coating Application

EPOTHANE® BASECOAT GRANIKOL BINDER is mixed with FOX GRANIKOL FILLER, poured onto the surface and applied evenly with a notched trowel. When the coating reaches the appropriate consistency, air must be released using a spike roller. If the spike roller application is delayed, spike roller marks may remain on the surface.

  6. 6

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

Tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or epoxy thinner after application. Once the product has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

Critical

Surface and ambient temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Application must not be carried out outside this range.

Critical

After the application is completed, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering will form on the coating, causing it to lose its properties; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Critical

The floor temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Attention must be paid to dew formation and condensation.

Critical

Concrete substrates must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. The surface moisture content must be a maximum of 4%.

Critical

After component B has been fully added to component A, mixing must be carried out for at least 3 minutes with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. If the specified mixing paddle is not used, air will be entrained into the product and air bubbles will form on the coating.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, product containers should be kept at +20°C–+25°C before use to bring them to application-ready condition.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

The product must be stored between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Critical

Approaching storage and application areas with open flame is dangerous; these areas must be ventilated. Appropriate work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions where ambient and surface temperature is assumed to be +20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on uneven surfaces and in cold weather conditions.

Information

The product does not contain volatile organic compounds (VOC-solvent).
