Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® COLORTOP is a two-component, epoxy resin-based, high chemical resistance, roller-applied coloured primer and coating material. The product can be applied as a primer and topcoat layer in the FOX DECOFLAKE CLASSIC system, as a protective topcoat on sand-broadcast surfaces, and as a primer prior to epoxy/polyurethane-based floor coatings. With a density of 1.50±0.05 g/cm³, a Shore D hardness of ≥75 and an adhesion strength of ≥2.5 N/mm², the product must be applied at substrate and ambient temperatures between +10°C and +30°C. When the two components (A+B) are mixed, the product offers approximately 45 minutes of pot life, becomes ready for pedestrian traffic after 1 day, for light traffic after 3 days, and reaches full cure in 7 days. It is available in RAL7001, RAL7032, RAL7035, RAL9010 and other RAL colours.

Application Steps

    Surface Preparation

    The concrete substrates to be coated must be prepared using abrasive equipment (shot blasting, milling, diamond grinding, etc.) to remove the cement laitance and achieve an open-pore surface. Weak concrete sections must be removed, small voids and holes must be fully opened, and the resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. Voids, cracks and broken concrete must be filled with FOX MORTAR FC188 T / FOX FATSMORTAR FC245 / FOX FASTMORTAR FC233 or a mortar prepared by adding approximately 1.5 parts of 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand to 1 part FOX EPOTHANE® COLORTOP.

    Checking Application Conditions

    The surface moisture content must be below 4% (tested by CM measurement or oven-drying method); there must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must be max. 80%, substrate temperature min. +10°C – max. +30°C, ambient temperature min. +10°C – max. +30°C, and material temperature min. +10°C – max. +30°C. It must be confirmed that the substrate temperature is at least +3°C above the dew point.

    Mixing

    Ensure that product temperatures are between +10°C and +30°C. Component A is mixed on its own using an electric mixer (300–400 rpm) and a suitable mixing paddle until a homogeneous colour is achieved with no product remaining at the bottom or sides of the container. Component B is then added entirely to Component A and mixed for at least 3 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Excessive mixing should be avoided to minimise air entrainment.

    Priming

    After surface preparation is complete, FOX EPOTHANE® COLORTOP is poured onto the surface and spread with a squeegee. After squeegee application, the priming process is completed by back-rolling with a roller. Substrate temperature (min. +10°C) must be strictly observed.

    Coating Application

    In sand-broadcast systems, the material is applied with a rubber squeegee and then back-rolled with a roller to complete the application. In roller applications, the material is poured onto the surface, spread with a squeegee and back-rolled with a roller. In the FOX DECOFLAKE system, the material is likewise poured, spread with a squeegee and back-rolled. Where required, FOX EPOTHANE® ACC can be used to accelerate the curing time; contact the technical department for usage instructions.

    Tool Cleaning

    After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvents such as FOX CS810 or FOX C380. Once FOX EPOTHANE® COLORTOP has cured, it can only be removed from surfaces by mechanical means.

The substrate temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Application must not be carried out outside this range.

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. Water contact will cause softening and blistering of the coating, leading to loss of properties; in such a case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Beware of dew point and condensation. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be installed in slabs on grade.

Mixing must be carried out exclusively with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Otherwise, air will be entrained into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating surface.

The product must not be thinned.

Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%.

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather applications, the ambient and substrate temperature should be raised; to improve workability, packaging should be conditioned at +20°C–+25°C before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

Shelf life: 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight.

Must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost. During short-term storage, a maximum of 3 pallets may be stacked; during long-term storage, pallets must not be stacked.

It is dangerous to approach storage and application areas with open flames; areas must be ventilated.

Appropriate work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application in accordance with occupational safety regulations. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. Store out of reach of children.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of +20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on uneven surfaces and in cold weather conditions.

Information

In resin-based systems, pot life and curing times are affected by ambient temperature, substrate temperature and air humidity. Curing slows at low temperatures and accelerates at high temperatures.
