FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER FL is an epoxy-based, two-component, filled, low-viscosity primer set. It is designed for use on porous concrete surfaces, normal and highly absorbent substrates. It is applied as a primer beneath polyurea and spray polyurethane coatings, as well as FOX PURMAX® SPRAYTEC series and FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings. Thanks to its high chemical and mechanical resistance, excellent surface adhesion, and low viscosity, it can be applied with ease even in cold weather. The set consists of components A and B, supplied in 30 kg tin pails. The product exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, including ≥1.5 N/mm² adhesion strength to concrete and ~45 N/mm² compressive strength at 7 days.

Application Steps

Surface Preparation
Concrete substrates to be coated must be prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling, or diamond grinding to remove laitance and achieve an open-pore surface. Weak concrete fragments must be removed, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. Substrate repairs must be carried out using suitable products from the FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER series. The substrate moisture content must be below 6%, relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%, and the substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

Mixing
Ensure that product temperatures are between +20°C and +25°C. Mix component A, FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER FL, with a suitable mixer for 1 minute without entraining air. Then pour component B onto component A and mix continuously for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. If required, after mixing A and B, add 60–70 Afs (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand or other fillers and mix for a further 2 minutes. Avoid over-mixing to reduce air entrainment. Mixing equipment: electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle.

Application (As Primer)
Apply FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER FL using a roller, trowel, or notched trowel. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. Apply a second coat if required depending on surface condition. While the material is still wet, 40–45 Afs (0.3–0.5 mm) silica sand may be broadcast onto the surface.

Cleaning of Application Tools
Tools and equipment used after application must be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER FL has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.
The substrate temperature during application must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Application must not be carried out outside this range.
After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering may develop on the coating; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.
The substrate moisture content must be a maximum of 4% (as stated in the technical data table) and below 6% depending on application conditions. There must be no rising moisture according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test).
Relative air humidity must be a maximum of 80%. Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation; the substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.
Mixing must be carried out exclusively with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Otherwise, air will be entrained into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating.
Concrete surfaces to be coated with polyurea must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application; a vapour barrier layer must be provided for slabs laid on ground.
Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.
In cold weather, packaging should be kept at +20°C/+25°C to improve the workability of the products.
Rain, dust, wind, animals, and insects must be prevented from coming into contact with the coating while it is still fresh.
The product must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight and protected from frost. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.
Open flames near storage and application areas are dangerous; these areas must be ventilated. Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles, and a mask must be worn during application. In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash immediately with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.
Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and substrate temperature of +20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
In resin-based systems, pot life and curing times are affected by ambient temperature, substrate temperature, and air humidity; at higher temperatures, pot life and working time are reduced.
