Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB-HD is an epoxy-based, two-component, thixotropic, moisture-barrier-forming, solvent-free, grease-consistency transparent primer set. It can be applied below +10°C and up to 100% relative humidity, making it suitable for use in demanding climatic and moisture conditions. It provides excellent adhesion to dry, damp and fresh concrete surfaces as well as non-blasted steel surfaces, and also offers high adhesion on glossy and smooth surfaces. It can be used as a primer before epoxy and polyurethane coatings, as a bonding agent for epoxy-based levelling mortars and screeds, or mixed with silica sand as a repair and filling mortar. It provides good corrosion protection on steel and retains its flexibility over time alongside high chemical and mechanical resistance. Supplied as a 15 kg set (Component A: 11.5 kg + Component B: 3.5 kg).

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

    Weak concrete fragments on the surface to be coated must be removed, and small voids and holes must be fully opened up. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. Surface repairs, filling of voids and levelling of the surface should be carried out using a mortar prepared by mixing FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB-HD primer with 60–70 Afs (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand.

    Checking Application Conditions

    The surface temperature must be a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +30°C. Ambient relative humidity may be up to 100%; however, care must be taken against dew formation and condensation. The surface temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Ensure that product temperatures are between +5°C and +30°C.

    Mixing

    Pour Component B of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB-HD onto Component A. Mix continuously for 2 minutes using an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Avoid over-mixing to minimise air entrainment.

    Application as Primer

    Apply FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB-HD using a roller, trowel or zero-notch trowel. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. If necessary, apply two coats of primer depending on the surface condition.

    Application as Mortar Coating / Repair Mortar

    FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB-HD is applied over the still-tacky FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER primer using screed rails, mixed with 60–70 Afs (0.1–0.3 mm), 40–45 Afs (0.2–0.5 mm) or 15–25 Afs (0.7–1.2 mm) silica sand. After a short waiting period, it is compacted and the surface is levelled using a trowel or a PTFE-coated power float (20–90 rpm).

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

    Tools and equipment used after application can be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB-HD has hardened, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

Concrete surfaces to be coated must have a minimum compressive strength of 25 N/mm² and a minimum tensile strength of 1.5 N/mm².

The surface temperature must be a minimum of +5°C. Care must be taken to ensure the surface temperature is at least +3°C above the dew point.

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering will develop on the coating, causing it to lose its properties; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Failure to use the specified mixing paddle will entrain air into the product, causing air bubbles to form on the coating.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, the ambient and surface temperature should be raised; products should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from coming into contact with the coating while it is still fresh.

Important

In resin-based systems, pot life and curing times are affected by ambient temperature, surface temperature and air humidity. To ensure the product achieves full cure, ambient and surface temperatures must not fall below the specified minimum temperature levels.

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be ventilated.

Critical

Appropriate work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. The product must be stored out of reach of children.

Important

Store in the original unopened packaging in a cool, dry place, protected from frost. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture (stored between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight).

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C; actual consumption may vary depending on surface texture and ambient temperature. Consumption increases on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
