Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® THINCOAT is an epoxy resin-based, two-component, high chemical resistance, solvent-free, coloured thin floor coating. The product has a total solids content of 100% and contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC/solvents). The recommended application thickness is 0.35–0.40 mm, achieved in a total of 2 coats at a consumption of 0.5–0.6 kg/m². With a density of 1.40 gr/cm³ and a Shore D hardness of 85 after 7 days, the product achieves an adhesion strength to concrete of >1.5 N/mm². Its fluid consistency allows easy application with a notched trowel; its antimicrobial structure ensures hygienic environments. The product consists of components A and B and must be applied at surface, ambient and material temperatures between +10°C and +30°C. The pot life at +23°C is 35 minutes.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

Concrete substrates must be mechanically prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding to remove laitance and achieve an open-pored surface. Weak concrete sections must be removed and small voids and holes must be opened up. The resulting dust must be removed with an industrial vacuum. To fill voids and level the surface, a mortar prepared by mixing EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer with 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand should be used.

  2. 2

    Checking Application Conditions

Surface moisture content must be below 4% (check by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative air humidity must not exceed 80%. Surface, ambient and material temperature must be between +10°C and +30°C. Ensure that the floor temperature is at least +3°C above the dew point.

  3. 3

    Priming

Surfaces to be coated must be primed with the appropriate EPOTHANE® series primer for the surface condition. Ensure that the floor temperature is a minimum of +8°C. After the primer has cured, proceed with the application of FOX EPOTHANE® THINCOAT within the specified application window.

  4. 4

    Mixing

Ensure that product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C. First, mix component A thoroughly on its own using an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle until a homogeneous colour is achieved and no product remains on the bottom or sides of the container. Then add component B completely into component A and mix for at least 3 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Avoid over-mixing to prevent air entrainment. The pot life at +23°C is 35 minutes.

  5. 5

    Coating Application

FOX EPOTHANE® THINCOAT is poured onto the surface and spread evenly with a notched trowel. Immediately after the notched trowel application, the surface is back-rolled with a roller. A total of 2 coats at a consumption of 0.5–0.6 kg/m² yields a coating thickness of 0.35–0.40 mm.

  6. 6

    Tool Cleaning

After application, tools and equipment must be cleaned with solvent or epoxy thinner. Once FOX EPOTHANE® THINCOAT has cured, it can only be removed from surfaces by mechanical means.

Critical

Concrete surfaces to be coated must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application.

Critical

Surface moisture content must be below 4%. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM.

Critical

Surface, ambient and material temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C.

Critical

Ensure that the floor temperature is at least +3°C above the dew point. Condensation and water vapour accumulation will damage the coating.

Critical

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering may develop on the coating; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

Critical

Relative air humidity must not exceed 80%.

Critical

Mixing must be carried out using an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Otherwise air will be entrained into the product and air bubbles will form on the coating.

Important

Before mixing, ensure that the product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C. After adding component B to component A, mix for at least 3 minutes.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, containers should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

Store in the original unopened packaging in a cool, dry place, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Important

For short-term storage, stack no more than 3 pallets high and dispatch on a first-in, first-out basis. For long-term storage, pallets must not be stacked on top of one another.

Critical

Open flames near storage and application areas are dangerous; areas must be ventilated.

Critical

Wear work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap. If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. Store out of reach of children.

Information

The technical values above are given at +23°C and 50% relative humidity. Higher temperatures shorten the pot life; lower temperatures extend it.

Information

Chemical resistance values are the results of tests conducted at room temperature. Elevated temperatures and/or chemical mixtures may affect resistance. If the surface is exposed to chemicals, it must be cleaned within 1 hour at most.
