FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB is an epoxy-based, two-component, moisture-barrier-forming, solvent-free, low-viscosity transparent primer set. It provides excellent adhesion to dry, damp and fresh concrete as well as non-shot-blasted steel surfaces; it is reliably applied as a primer under epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings.

Product Description
FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB is an epoxy-based, two-component, moisture-barrier-forming, solvent-free, low-viscosity transparent primer set. It can be applied to dry, damp and fresh concrete surfaces as well as non-shot-blasted steel surfaces, glossy and smooth surfaces. It is used as a primer before epoxy and polyurethane coatings, as a bonding agent for epoxy-based levelling mortars and screeds, or mixed with silica sand as a repair and filling mortar. It is the preferred primer under FOX EPOTHANE® series epoxy floor coatings, FOX PURATHANE® series polyurethane floor coatings and FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings. The product has a density of 1.03 ±0.05 gr/cm³, contains 100% total solids and cannot be thinned. At +23°C and 50% relative humidity, the working time is 35–40 minutes. The adhesion strength on concrete is ≥2 N/mm², the compressive strength is approximately 109 N/mm² and the flexural tensile strength is approximately 40 N/mm².

Application Steps

Surface Preparation
Concrete substrates to be coated must be prepared using abrasive equipment (shot blasting, milling, diamond grinding, etc.) to remove the cement laitance and achieve an open-porous surface. Weak concrete fragments must be removed and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. To fill voids and level the surface, a mortar obtained by mixing 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand with FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB should be used.

Checking Application Conditions
Ambient and substrate temperature must be a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +30°C. Relative air humidity may be up to 100%; however, care must be taken to ensure that the substrate temperature is at least +3°C above the dew point. The material temperature should also be verified to be between +5°C and +30°C.

Mixing
Ensure that product temperatures are between +5°C and +30°C. Mix component A FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB with a suitable mixer for 1 minute without entraining air. Then pour component B onto component A and mix continuously for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. If required, after components A and B have been mixed, 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand or other fillers may be added and mixed for a further 2 minutes. Avoid over-mixing to minimise air entrainment. Mixing equipment: electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle.

Application as a Primer
Apply FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB with a roller, trowel or zero-notch squeegee. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. If necessary, depending on the surface condition, apply two coats of primer. If an epoxy or polyurethane coating is to be applied, silica sand 40–45 AFS (0.3–0.5 mm) may be broadcast onto the material while it is still wet.

Application as a Surface Levelling Primer
Rough surfaces must be levelled prior to epoxy/polyurethane floor coating. Apply the mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB and silica sand 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) as a skim coat using a zero-notch squeegee, at the required thickness taking into account the surface roughness.

Application as a Mortar Coating / Repair Mortar
Apply the mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB with silica sand 60–70 AFS, 40–45 AFS and 15–25 AFS onto the still-tacky FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER primer coat using screed rails. After a short waiting period, compact and level the surface with a trowel or a PTFE-coated power float (20–90 rpm).

Tool Cleaning
After application, tools and equipment can be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HB has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.
The substrate temperature must be a minimum of +5°C. The compressive strength of the concrete to be coated must be at least 25 N/mm² and the tensile strength at least 1.5 N/mm².
After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering will occur on the coating; the coating will lose its properties and must be completely removed and reapplied.
Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. If the specified mixing paddle is not used, air will be entrained into the product and air bubbles will form on the coating.
Beware of dew point and condensation. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.
Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be created in floor slabs resting on the ground.
Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.
In cold weather, the ambient and substrate temperature should be raised; to improve the workability of the products, the packaging should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.
Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the area while the coating is still fresh.
Store in the original unopened packaging in a cool, dry place, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.
Open flames near storage and application areas are dangerous; areas must be ventilated. Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Avoid contact with skin and eyes; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.
Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
In resin-based systems, pot life and curing times are affected by ambient temperature, substrate temperature and air humidity. Curing slows at low temperatures and accelerates at high temperatures.
