Product Description

FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT COMFORT is a polyurethane-based, two-component, solvent-free, self-levelling, flexible floor coating material. Developed to create comfortable floors, it can be applied to all types of interior floors where hygiene and comfort are paramount, such as hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, schools, nurseries, libraries, offices, conference halls, shopping centres, stores, gyms, residential buildings, laboratories and airport waiting lounges. With a recommended application thickness of 1.5 mm – 2.5 mm, it bridges cracks of 1 to 3 mm and provides approximately 4 dB sound reduction depending on application thickness. Total solids content is 100% and it cannot be thinned. FOX PURATHANE® TOPCOAT or ASPARTHANE® TOPCOAT series topcoat products can be applied over it.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

Concrete substrates to be coated must be mechanically prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding to remove laitance and open the pores. Weak concrete sections must be removed, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be removed with an industrial vacuum. For void repair and surface levelling, a mortar prepared from 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand and FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer should be used. The substrate must be sound, with a minimum compressive strength of 25 N/mm², a minimum tensile strength of 1.5 N/mm², a maximum moisture content of 4%, and a minimum floor temperature of +8°C.

  2. 2

    Ensuring Application Conditions

Surface, ambient and material temperatures must be within the range of minimum +10°C and maximum +30°C. Relative humidity must be a maximum of 80%. To guard against dew point and condensation, the floor temperature must be kept at least +3°C above the dew point.

  3. 3

    Priming

Surfaces to be coated must be pre-primed with a suitable FOX EPOTHANE® series primer appropriate to the surface condition. Floor temperature must be a minimum of +8°C. FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT COMFORT must be applied within the pot life of the primer.

  4. 4

    Mixing

Before mixing, confirm that product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C. Component A must be thoroughly mixed with an electric mixer until a homogeneous colour is achieved and no product remains on the bottom or sides of the container. Component B must then be added entirely to Component A and mixed continuously for 3–4 minutes. Avoid excessive mixing to prevent air entrainment. Mixing equipment: electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle.

  5. 5

    Coating Application

FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT COMFORT is poured onto the surface and spread evenly with a notched trowel. When the coating reaches the appropriate consistency, air must be released using a spike roller. If the spike roller application is delayed, marks may remain on the surface. If the substrate is homogeneous and void-free, spike roller application is not necessary. After application, protect from direct water contact for at least 24 hours.

  6. 6

    Topcoat Application

Over FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT COMFORT, FOX PURATHANE® TOPCOAT or ASPARTHANE® TOPCOAT series topcoat products must be applied in 2 coats. Refer to the product guide for product selection.

  7. 7

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or polyurethane thinner. Once the product has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

Critical

Surface temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. Ambient temperature and material temperature must also be kept within the same range.

Critical

Surface moisture content must be below 4%. Test method: CM measurement or oven-drying method. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test).

Critical

Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation. The floor temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

Critical

After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In the event of water contact, softening and blistering will occur on the coating and the entire coating will need to be removed and reapplied.

Critical

Before mixing, ensure that product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C.

Critical

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Use of an incorrect mixing paddle will entrain air into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application; a vapour barrier layer must be formed on slabs on grade, and the building's roof, walls, doors and windows must be completed.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, ambient and floor temperatures should be raised; products should be conditioned at +20°C to +25°C before use to ensure workability.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is fresh.

Important

Relative humidity must be a maximum of 80%.

Important

The product must be stored between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost. Shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture.

Information

For short-term storage, pallets must not be stacked more than 2 high. For long-term storage, pallets must not be stacked on top of each other.

Important

During application, appropriate work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations. Avoid skin and eye contact; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

It is dangerous to approach storage and application areas with open flames; these areas must be ventilated. Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas, and the product must be kept out of reach of children.

Information

The product contains no VOC (solvent). Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions at +20°C; actual consumption may vary depending on surface texture and ambient temperature.
