Product Description

FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT HARD is a polyurethane-based, two-component, solvent-free, self-levelling, semi-flexible coloured floor coating material designed for industrial floors. With 100% solid content, the product offers excellent chemical and mechanical resistance while its semi-flexible structure provides crack-bridging capability of 1–3 mm. The product can be manufactured in RAL colours and provides a glossy, hygienic surface appearance. After application, it can be overcoated with FOX PURATHANE® TOPCOAT series topcoat products. The product has a density of 1.35 gr/cm³, a recommended application thickness of 1.5–2.5 mm, and a pot life of 60 minutes at +23°C.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

    Concrete substrates to be coated must be opened to a porous surface by removing the cement laitance using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling or diamond grinding. Weak concrete fragments must be removed, small voids and holes must be opened up, and dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For substrate repairs, a mortar obtained by mixing 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand with FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer should be used. The concrete compressive strength must be at least 25 N/mm², tensile strength at least 1.5 N/mm², moisture content a maximum of 4%, and floor temperature a minimum of +8°C.

    Checking Application Conditions

    Surface moisture content must be below 4%, and relative humidity must be a maximum of 80%. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM. Surface, ambient and material temperatures must be between a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C; floor temperature must be kept at least +3°C above the dew point.

    Priming

    Surfaces to receive FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT HARD must have been previously primed with a suitable FOX EPOTHANE® series primer. The primer selection table should be consulted for primer choice. Care must be taken to ensure the floor temperature is a minimum of +8°C.

    Mixing

    Before starting to mix, ensure that the product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C. Component A must be thoroughly mixed with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm until a homogeneous colour is achieved and no product remains at the bottom or sides of the container. Component B is then added entirely to Component A and mixed continuously for 3–4 minutes. Excessive mixing should be avoided to minimise air entrainment.

    Coating Application

    FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT HARD is poured onto the surface and applied evenly with a notched trowel. When the coating reaches the appropriate consistency, a spike roller should be applied to release air. If the spike roller application is delayed, marks may remain on the surface. If the floor surface is homogeneous and void-free, spike roller application is not necessary. The recommended application thickness is 1.5–2.5 mm.

    Topcoat Application

    After the curing period is complete, the surface can be overcoated with 2 coats of FOX PURATHANE® TOPCOAT or ASPARTHANE® TOPCOAT series topcoat products. The relevant product guide should be consulted for product selection.

  7. 7

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

    After application, tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or polyurethane thinner. Once FOX PURATHANE® BASECOAT HARD has hardened, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

During and after application, surface, ambient and material temperatures must be between a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C.

After the application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In the event of water contact, softening and blistering will occur on the coating, causing it to lose its properties; the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.

The moisture content of the substrate must be below 4%. There must be no rising damp (ASTM polyethylene sheet test).

The floor temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Attention must be paid to dew formation and condensation.

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. If an unsuitable mixing paddle is used, air will be entrained into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be created in slabs resting on the ground.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, to improve the workability of the products, the containers should be kept at +20°C – +25°C until ready for use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Important

If the spike roller application is delayed, spike roller marks may remain on the surface.

Important

Must be stored in its original unopened packaging, in a cool and dry environment, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C. Shelf life is 6 months from the date of manufacture.

It is dangerous to approach storage and application areas with open flames; these areas must be ventilated.

Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. Contact with skin and eyes must be avoided; in case of contact, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

Relative humidity must be a maximum of 80%.

Colour changes may occur due to the effect of chemicals. High temperature values and/or mixtures of chemicals may affect chemical resistance.

Information

Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
