Product Description

FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TX is a two-component, low-solvent, special epoxy resin-based textured topcoat. Thanks to its thixotropic properties, it is easy to apply and has high adhesion to the substrate. It allows the creation of a textured, non-slip surface with an orange-peel appearance. It is applied as a topcoat in industrial and commercial areas requiring waterproof, dust-free, chemically and mechanically resistant floor coatings. With a density of 1.57 gr/cm³, the product contains 100% solids and is used without thinning. With technical properties such as a 30-minute pot life, a recommended coating thickness of 0.5 mm, and full cure in 7 days, it is suitable for demanding application environments. Mixing ratios and primer selection should be determined according to TDS system details.

Application Steps

  1. 1

    Surface Preparation

The concrete substrates to be coated must be opened to a porous surface using abrasive equipment (shot blasting, milling, diamond grinding, etc.) to remove the cement laitance. Weak concrete fragments must be removed, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For filling voids and levelling the surface, a mortar obtained by mixing 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand with FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER series primer should be used. The substrate compressive strength must be at least 25 N/mm², tensile strength at least 1.5 N/mm², moisture content maximum 4%, and substrate temperature minimum +8°C.

  2. 2

    Checking Application Conditions

Surface moisture content must be below 4% (by CM measurement or oven-drying method). There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test). Relative humidity must be a maximum of 80%. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point. Surface, ambient and material temperatures must be within the range of minimum +10°C and maximum +30°C.

  3. 3

    Mixing

Ensure that the product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C. Component A (containing pigment and filler) must be thoroughly mixed on its own with an electric mixer until a homogeneous colour is achieved. Then, after Component B has been fully added to Component A, the mixture must be mixed for at least 3 minutes at 300–400 rpm using an electric mixer and an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. Avoid excessive mixing to prevent air entrainment.

  4. 4

    Priming

Surfaces to be coated with FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TX must have been previously primed with a suitable primer from the FOX EPOTHANE® series. The substrate temperature must be a minimum of +8°C. Application must be carried out within the recoat window of the primer.

  5. 5

    Coating Application

FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TX is poured onto the surface to the desired thickness and spread evenly with a notched trowel. When the coating reaches the appropriate consistency, it is rolled with a coral sponge roller to create the texture (orange peel) pattern. Roller application must be carried out in a cross direction.

  6. 6

    Tool and Equipment Cleaning

Tools and equipment used must be cleaned with solvent or epoxy thinner after application. Once FOX EPOTHANE® BASECOAT TX has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.

Critical

During application, the substrate temperature must be a minimum of +10°C and a maximum of +30°C. The same range applies to ambient and material temperatures.

Critical

After the application is completed, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. In case of water contact, the coating will soften and blistering will occur, and the coating will need to be completely removed and reapplied.

Critical

Relative humidity must be a maximum of 80%. Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.

Critical

Surface moisture content must be below 4%. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM (polyethylene sheet test).

Critical

Mixing must be carried out with an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm and the specified epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. If an incorrect mixing paddle is used, air may be entrained into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating.

Important

Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be created in floors resting on ground.

Important

Before starting mixing, ensure that the product temperatures are between +15°C and +25°C.

Important

Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.

Important

In cold weather, to improve the workability of the products, the containers should be kept at +20°C – +25°C until ready for use.

Important

Rain, dust, wind, animals and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.

Critical

Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous. Areas must be ventilated.

Critical

Protective work clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask must be worn during application. In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Important

The product must be stored between +5°C and +30°C, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry environment. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Critical

Do not thin; the product must be used as supplied.

Information

Pot life at +23°C is 30 minutes. Higher temperatures shorten the pot life; lower temperatures extend it.
