Product Description
FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HBF is an epoxy-based, two-component, moisture-barrier-forming, solvent-borne, low-viscosity transparent primer set. Thanks to its ability to be applied below +10°C and up to 100% relative humidity, it can be used even in challenging weather conditions. It is applied as a primer on dry, damp, and fresh concrete surfaces as well as non-blasted steel, glossy and smooth surfaces, highly porous substrates, and asphalt and bitumen membrane surfaces. It provides a good level of corrosion protection on steel while maintaining long-term performance with its high chemical and mechanical resistance. It is used as a primer beneath FOX EPOTHANE® and FOX PURATHANE® series floor coatings and FOX PURMAX® series polyurethane waterproofing coatings.

Application Steps
- 1
Surface Preparation
Concrete substrates to be coated must be prepared using abrasive equipment such as shot blasting, milling, or diamond grinding to remove the cement laitance and achieve an open-porous surface. Weak concrete particles must be removed from the surface, and small voids and holes must be fully opened. The resulting dust must be cleaned with an industrial vacuum. For substrate repairs and filling of voids, a mortar prepared by mixing 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) quartz sand with FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HBF should be used. The concrete substrate must have a minimum compressive strength of 25 N/mm² and a minimum tensile strength of 1.5 N/mm².
- 2
Checking Application Conditions
Substrate temperature: minimum +5°C, maximum +30°C; ambient temperature: minimum +5°C, maximum +30°C; material temperature: minimum +5°C, maximum +30°C. Relative air humidity may be a maximum of 100%. Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation; the substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.
- 3
Mixing
Verify that product temperatures are between +5°C and +30°C. Mix component A with a suitable mixer for 1 minute without entraining air. Then pour component B onto component A and mix continuously for 2 minutes until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. If required, after mixing components A and B, add 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand or other fillers and mix for a further 2 minutes. An electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle must be used. Avoid over-mixing to minimise air entrainment.
- 4
Application as a Primer
Apply FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HBF by roller, trowel, or notched squeegee. Ensure that the application covers the entire surface without voids. If the product has been absorbed into the surface, the primer application must be repeated. If an epoxy or polyurethane coating is to be applied over it, 40–45 AFS (0.3–0.5 mm) silica sand may be broadcast onto the surface while the material is still wet.
- 5
Application as a Surface-Levelling Primer
On highly porous concrete substrates, apply FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HBF as the first coat by roller, trowel, or notched squeegee. After the primer has dried, taking into account the surface roughness, apply a mixture of FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HBF and 60–70 AFS (0.1–0.3 mm) silica sand by scraping with a notched squeegee to achieve the required thickness.
- 6
Tool and Equipment Cleaning
After application, tools and equipment used can be cleaned with solvent. Once FOX EPOTHANE® PRIMER HBF has cured, it can only be removed from the surface by mechanical means.
After application is complete, the coating must be protected from direct water contact for at least 24 hours. If water contact occurs, softening and blistering may develop on the coating; in this case the coating must be completely removed and reapplied.
The substrate and ambient temperature must be a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +30°C. Application must not be carried out outside this range.
Attention must be paid to dew point and condensation. The substrate temperature must be at least +3°C above the dew point.
Mixing must be carried out using an electric mixer at 300–400 rpm with an epoxy/polyurethane resin mixing paddle. If the specified mixing paddle is not used, air may be entrained into the product, causing air bubbles on the coating.
Concrete surfaces to be coated with epoxy/polyurethane must be at least 3 weeks old prior to application. A vapour barrier layer must be installed in floor slabs resting on the ground.
Materials to be used should be brought to the application site 1–2 days in advance and allowed to acclimatise to ambient conditions.
In cold weather, to improve the workability of the products, the containers should be conditioned at +20°C – +25°C before use.
Rain, dust, wind, animals, and insects must be prevented from entering the building while the coating is still fresh.
To ensure complete curing of the product, the ambient and substrate temperature must not fall below the specified minimum temperature levels.
Approaching storage and application areas with open flames is dangerous; areas must be adequately ventilated.
Work clothing, protective gloves, goggles, and a mask must be worn during application. In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash thoroughly with plenty of water and soap; if swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.
Food and beverages must not be brought into application areas. The product must be stored out of reach of children.
When stored in its original unopened packaging in a cool, dry environment, protected from frost, between +5°C and +30°C, the shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture.
Consumption figures are given for ideal conditions assuming an ambient and surface temperature of 20°C. It should be noted that consumption will increase on damaged surfaces and in cold weather conditions.
In resin-based systems, pot life and curing times are affected by ambient temperature, substrate temperature, and air humidity. Curing slows at low temperatures and accelerates at high temperatures.
